Nico Juetten and I met with John Scott (Advocate) and Shelagh McCall (Advocate and Member of the Scottish Human Rights Commission). The meeting discussed the implications of the recent Supreme Court judgment in the Cadder case, requiring legal representation for suspects under police questioning, including children. This was a useful meeting in preparation a meeting later in the day with Lord Carloway and members of his review team.
Nico Juetten and I met with Lord Carloway and Andrew McIntyre and Tim Barraclough (Scottish Government). We discussed issues around the detention and questioning of children in terms of their vulnerability, the need to comply with the Supreme Court judgement and the other players in the process. It was also an opportunity to raise the issue of the age of criminal responsibility and the imprisonment for 16-17 year olds.
