Scotland's Commissioner for Children and Young People
British Sign Language video clip of Kathleen Marshall's welcome speech
My name is Kathleen Marshall and I am the first Commissioner for Children and Young People in Scotland. My job is to make sure that people listen when children and young people have important things to say about their lives. This might include people in schools, parliament and law courts.
I must also make sure that adults keep the promises made to children in the United Nations Convention on the rights of the child. This is a piece of international law that says that all children and young people up to the age of 18 have a right to:
- Be protected from harm
- Be given what they need to have a good life
- Have a say when decisions are being made that will affect them
In the next few months, I will have lots of information and helpful things to give to people about children and young people's rights. As this is the first stage of our new website, we would love to hear your opinions and suggestions, so please feel free to get in touch.
